Profile of Mr. Zhang Xiangde
Born in Shangzhi City of Heilongjiang Province in 1962 and graduated from Heilongjiang University majored in Chinese Literature in 1992. Zhang loved painting since childhood and, from the age of 19, attended the art classes in the Museum of Heilongjiang Province and Harbin Normal University. In the middle 1980s, he began to learn watercolor painting with the well-known watercolorist Mr. Chen Zhong. The past 20 years has witnessed many hardship and frustrations though, Zhang is still persistent and adhering to his pursuit. He said: “To choose art is to choose endless sufferings”. Only with the courage of “failure is no shame but fear is” and the spirit of hard working has he made great achievements in his career. His watercolor painting, while following the “three elements” of color, water and technique of brushing, integrates harmoniously into a whole the concept of subject and object compatibility, mind and matter communication focusing on “mental image”, “introspection”, “spirit” and “character” of Chinese painting, and at the same time, perfectly makes use of the “handwritings” and “styles” of calligraphy, substantially breaking through the traditional techniques of watercolor painting with profound innovation.
Mr Guan Weixing, the well-known watercolorist and Deputy Director of Watercolor Painting Commission of China Artists Association，made the following comments on Zhang’s watercolor paintings: “In his paintings, we can see the charms of literary language and, can also feel the perfect matching of literature and painting with the two woven into each other and showing off each other.” “He paints in a free and unrestrained manner, focusing on the expression of his feelings. His works gives off a noble aroma. He has made a success.” In September 2005, personal watercolor and calligraphy exhibition of Zhang Xiangde was held at Art Gallery of Heilongjiang Province, and in December, the watercolor painting exhibition was held in Rongbaozhai in Beijing, which was the first personal watercolor exhibition held at Rongbaozhai during the last three hundred years. In May 2006, Rongbaozhai held the “Watercolor Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Well-Known Painters, Namely Guan Weixing, Zhang Kerang, Zhang Xiangde & Zhu Linen”. In July 2007, Zhang won the great crown at Beijing International Art Fair, named as the “top ten most influential artists”, the only winner of the top prize successively for three years from 2005-2007 at Beijing International Art Fair. In October 2007, his works Evening Songs from Snows was selected for “the Eighth National Watercolor and Pastel Painting Exhibition”. In December in Shanghai Duoyunxuan, the “Watercolor Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Well-Known Painters, Namely Guan Weixing, Zhang Kerang & Zhang Xiangde” was held. In March 2008, the personal watercolor exhibition of Zhang Xiangde was held at Art Gallery of Heilongjiang Daily. In July 2009, invited by the Singapore Ministry of Culture, Zhang Xiangde held his personal watercolor exhibition in Nation Library of Singapore and his biography ,works commentaries, and art collections were housed by National Library of Singapore. In the same year, his watercolor Sunny Day was selected for “the Eleventh National Art Exhibition”. In 2010, his works Affection under the Gourd Rack was selected for “the Ninth National Watercolor and Pastel Painting Exhibition”. Now Zhang Xiangde is a member of Chinese Artists Association, Curator First level Artist of China, Heilongjiang CPPCC member, Director of Heilongjiang Artists Association, President of Modern Watercolor Painting Research Academy of Heilongjiang Province, Deputy Director of Watercolor Painting Commission of Heilongjiang Artist Association, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Entrepreneurs Painting & Calligraphy of Industry & Commerce Association of Harbin City, Curator of Zhang Xiangde Art Gallery, and has served as judge of Provincial Watercolor Exhibition successively since 1993.
