Shen Gubo, director of the Traditional Mural Studio of the Mineral Pigment Research Institute of China Academy of Art. He was born into a family of artists. From an early age he demonstrated an artistic talent and so his father decided he should learn traditional Chinese painting. He finished his studies at art school in his twenties, and went on to become an art teacher and, later, an art editor. During this period, his works were mainly influenced by the traditions of Western oil painting. From 2004 to 2008, together with his wife Liu Xianghong, he created large-scaled murals for the well-known Buddhist Temple of Xuanzhong. Then, in 2010, they started to prepare a series of murals based on the Avatamsaka Sutra for a famous temple in Hangzhou. Inspired by these large-scale creative projects, Shen Gubo developed unique techniques for creating what he calls ‘Mineral Pigment Landscapes’. These combine traditional Chinese painting styles with the use of natural mineral pigments applied in unconventional ways, which lend texture and depth to the landscapes he creates. His paintings seek to express his reflections upon the harmonious relation between human beings, nature and the universe.
