胡志颖是我赞赏艺术家的典型。
从他1989年的早期纸上水墨作品到他最近的向培根表示敬意的作品,他一直不墨守陈规,而是不断尝试将西方与东方影响的精髓融合起来。他从未有过机械的做法,联想有时是微妙的或者是明显的,但总是充满想象力。
在他所使用的混合媒介中,有时可以看到不同文化的融合。时常,这种融合通过画的母题表现出来:抽象/具象,表现主义/道教,中国符号/西方符号,等等。《天风海雨》(1989年)是宇宙论的和神秘的宣纸水墨作品,将书写、符号与艺术结为一体。它是那种释放了观者潜意识中的强有力的意象的作品,与罗夏墨迹试验不无相似。《文字之一》和《文字之二》(1992年)是油彩与丙烯、银粉与金粉、水墨、中国大漆与清漆的巧妙结合,它吸引住观者,使其心醉神迷。《数学之二》(1994年)和《内典录之二》(1997年)是自然图像、人类图像和抽象图像的复杂的但完美地平衡的世界,将超现实主义的影响和中国的影响奇妙地交融在一起,表现了迷人而又恐怖的美。《重造培根——女子角斗》(2005年)是对培根表达的敬意,同时又是一种戏仿。它通过添加增强或减弱暴力的元素进一步扭曲了培根的标志性的扭曲形象。
在我看来,胡志颖是终极的真正的艺术家,具有强烈的个人特性和强悍的不妥协的个性。他具有强烈的深思熟虑的方向意识,不过他总会使观者感到惊奇不已。
他在发挥他的天赋只为了满足一种强烈的(并且是合理的)自尊感。人们不得不想到晚期才得到承认的那些著名的19和20世纪的前卫艺术家们所走的孤独的道路。
总之,胡志颖的风格和艺术生涯显然没有大部分新潮流中的当代艺术(包括中国与西方)的特征,而与那些最终留下巨大的历史遗产的大师要接近得多。

An Artist as Unconventional Personality: On Hu Zhiying

Hu Zhiying is the prototype of the artist that I admire.
From his early inks on paper in 1989 to his recent homage to Bacon, he has always traveled off the beaten path, but in a continuous attempt to combine the essence of western and eastern influences. He never had a mechanistic approach, and the associations can be subtle or obvious, but always imaginative.
The blending of the cultures can sometimes be seen in the mixed media he is using. Most of the time, it shows through the themes of the painting, abstraction / figuration, expressionism / Daoism, Chinese / western characters, etc. Nature's Mystery (1989) is a cosmic and mystic ink on Chinese paper with a conjunction of writing, symbols, and art. It is the kind of work that unleashes powerful images in the subconscious of the viewer, not unlike a Rorschach ink-blot. Characters I and II (1992) are masterful combinations of oils and acrylic, silver and gold powder, ink, lacquer and varnish which cast a spell upon the viewer and hold him spellbound. Mathematics II (1994) and Buddhist Scriptures II (1997) are complex but perfectly balanced worlds of natural, human, and abstract images, wonderfully blending surrealistic and Chinese influences, and expressing enchanting but terrifying beauty. Female Wrestling (2005) is homage to Bacon and a parody at the same time. It further distorts the trademark distorted figures of Bacon by adding elements which either reinforce or attenuate the violence.
To me, Hu Zhiying is the ultimate authentic artist, with a fierce individualism and a powerful no-compromise personality. He has a strong well thought-out sense of direction, although he will always surprise the viewers.
He is using his talent to solely satisfy a strong (and justified) sense of self-worth. One has to think of the solitary path followed by famous nineteenth and twentieth avant-garde artists who were recognized on the late.
In all that, his style and career are clearly uncharacteristic of that of most of the new wave of contemporary art (both Chinese and Western) and much closer to those who have ended up leaving a huge historical legacy.
